When I grow up, I want to be...

After completing the Oakwood Chocolate Shop portion of the Social Studies unit about goods and services, we studied many different types of services and the students chose a career or profession they would like to be when they grow up. They had to figure out what type of schooling was required, explain why were interested in that profession, and what skills would be needed. They typed their reports on the iPads and used a photo of their face to draw a picture of their future selves in the profession.

To wrap up the unit, the primary students had "Career Hour" in which students dressed as their profession and read their descriptions.

The Art of Invention

During the last few weeks, the Hillel students have been working on a project in conjunction with Wright Memorial Library called The Art of Invention. Using American masterworks of art and Dayton's history of invention, students were inspired by art to create sculptures out of cardboard using child-safe tools.

To help them practice "being inspired" by artwork, the primary students completed a collaborative sculpture using inspiration from the drawing "Sans Arc Lakota" by Black Hawk.

The primary students created another class-wide work in Art class with Mrs. Martin. They were inspired by the painting, "Allies Day, May 1917" by Childe Hassam.

The students were inspired by the original painting to create a celebration for Israeli Independence Day.
Now that they had practice being inspired by art, they set off to create their own!
Students looked through a folder of great American artworks until they felt inspired by a piece. They sketched their inspiration and got to work building it using cardboard and tools. They painted their sculptures and typed out an explanation that will be displayed with their piece.

Here are a few shots from Sunday's reception! If you were not able to make it on Sunday, don't worry! Their cardboard masterpieces displayed with the masterwork inspiration and explanation will be on display at Wright Memorial Library until June 1st!

Middles enjoy learning                            in so many ways! Please enjoy our final blog post for the 2018...
