Last week was a big one for America. With Election Day on Tuesday (November 8th) and Veterans Day on Friday (November 11th), we spent the week learning about our country.
First, we talked about American symbols. We have learned about the Liberty Bell, bald eagle, American flag, Declaration of Independence, Statue of Liberty, George Washington, U.S. Seal, and The White House. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang America the Beautiful.
Then, the second graders taught the class about elections and voting. They asked questions to make sure the class understood.
On Tuesday, we had our own election! We had learned from the second graders that only adults could vote for President; so, we set up an Animal Election!
First, students filled out their voter registration cards.
They were told the candidates and understood they were only allowed to vote for one.
cat
dog
monkey
rabbit
One at a time, they brought their registration card to the polling place to fill out their secret ballot.
Completed ballots went into the tub!
And, after voting, each student received a sticker, of course!
The votes were tallied and results came in:
The winner is:
Dog!

We learned about Veterans Day and the importance of honoring and thanking those that serve in the armed forces. We learned that wearing poppy flower pins is one way to honor our veterans on Veterans Day.
We worked together to create enough for the school, our families, and even those that work at the synagogue to be able to show their respect to veterans today!
Our monthly visit from the children's librarian at Wright Memorial Library was Friday! Since we have been learning about American symbols, she read to us some fabulous books about inspirational American people!
She even brought us a very special pop-up book about The White House!
The kids were mesmerized!
A Special Birthday Surprise!
To celebrate the much-loved Mrs. Sloane-Brenner's birthday on November 4th, the Primary class surprised her with a basket-filled with some of the best goodies and a cake baked by the wonderful Rochel Simon!
What a sweet surprise during Shabbat on Friday afternoon!
